In 2006, the Max Planck Institutes for Informatics and for Software Systems agreed to maintain joint central services, with personnel in Kaiserslautern and Saarbruecken.

The joint central services seek to ensure optimal working conditions for the institutes' scientists, within the regulations of the funders (states and federal government) and the applicable bylaws of the Max Planck Society.
